Clearly no homeowner who is already equipped with a decent roof is going to go all the way for a solar roof especially when the full replacement could cost $ 10,000 and upwards for a large house. However, Tesla is convinced that the new solar roof design will be attractive and much less
expensive than regular roofs long-term because of the offsetting cost savings from the savings in energy. No doubt Tesla has its own insights into the business but it is going to be difficult to understand how homeowners who are already financially strained are going to pay for an expensive integrated solar roof when they have cheaper alternatives available. The real action could be in big commercial institutions but, despite its position in residential solar, SolarCity is not really succeeded in penetrating the commercial market. In fact, there is no clear way for the Solar City/Tesla to establish a big growth business just from residential solar especially when the entire market is so fragmented.
